Planning for your fence will ensure that you choose the best option for your needs.
- Sketch a map of the area. Aerial or drone photos are good sources to see the lay of the land.
- Mark permanent roads, gates and property lines.
- Identify any areas that will need special attention.
- Draw the desired fencing on the map.
These fences generally consist of three to five strands of barbed wire. Since the barbs on the wire can harm livestock that tend to be more active such as pigs, horses, sheep and goats, barbed wire should be used only for cattle containment and property line marking. Barbed wire is a less costly option compared to other fence types which makes it a good choice for long distances.
Installing barbed wire involves stringing wires from the top down. Barbs should be removed from any gate post or anchor post. After the wire has been strung along the fence, it should be tightened to the appropriate tension before it is permanently attached with clips.
Since these fences present less physical risk to active livestock, they are suitable for corrals and for containing cattle, hogs, horses, mules and other game. This fencing can be electrified for more secure livestock containment. They are generally lower cost compared to other fence types, but require permanent inline stretchers and springs. These fences are designed to withstand the impact of active livestock and then recover to their original state.
Special anchor bracing such as high-strength double H-braces are required. Normal anchor posts will not secure high tensile wire fences adequately. After the posts have been set, wires are strung along the posts followed by the installation of the in-line tensioners and spacers.
These fences are ideal for most types of livestock and are typically used for cattle, hogs, goats, horses, mule, sheep, poultry and other game. They can be built for temporary or permanent use. They require special electric controllers and mounting clips, which improve the fencing visibility by livestock.
Electric fences require fewer anchor posts. After the posts are installed, special insulator clips are required to prevent shorts in the circuits, along with a wire energizer. There are many electric fence designs depending on the application.
These fences are ideal for most types of livestock. They can be used safely without physical injury for cattle, hogs, goats, horses, mules, sheep, poultry and other game. They are also well suited for smaller animals because of the vertical and horizontal wire.
Calculating fence post and wire quantity
Once the fence type has been determined based on the application and use, the type and number of fence posts must be determined. A typical installation will consist of a combination of corner, line and anchor posts.
After the posts requirements have been determined, the amount of wire needs to be figured. This will primarily be based on the purpose of the fence. The number of strands required will determine the amount of wire needed for your fence.

For all types of fencing, the anchor and corner posts are installed first, then any anchor posts that will be on the tops of hills or the bottom of any valley dips. If the fence curves more than 10 degrees, an anchor post will be needed. Also, anchor posts are needed at certain distance intervals depending on the type of fencing and the type of posts.
Depending on the type of fence, it will need to be re-stretched once or twice a year. CMC’s steel fence T-posts are strong and durable, and only need occasional repainting if the paint gets scratched.
