CMC Steel's mini and micro mills are strategically located throughout the U.S.
As the domestic steelmaking segment of Commercial Metals Company, we operate seven EAF mini mills and two EAF micro mills, as well as a rerolling mill.
Our U.S. mills have the melt capacity to produce approximately six million tons of finished long steel products including straight and spooled rebar, rounds, wire rod, squares, flat bars, angles, channels, SBQ bars, T-posts, special sections and billets for rerolling and forging applications. Our state-of-the-art, quick change rolling mills provide unmatched manufacturing flexibility. When combined with our inventory stocking model, it provides you immediate access to all of our products for just-in-time delivery.
There is far more to CMC Steel than the steel we produce. Our world-class customer service team is committed to understanding your needs, developing custom solutions and delivering quality products on-time, every-time. The cornerstone of our customer commitment is to make doing business with us as easy and as seamless as possible. We are a dedicated team of steelmaking professionals committed to providing quality products and industry leading customer service that exceed your expectations.
Mini Mill Technology
All of our mills use the state-of-the-art, scrap based, Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking production process. The minimill EAF steelmaking technology is the cleanest and most energy efficient steelmaking process available today. For every ton of steel produced, we save the use of:
- 2,500 pounds of iron ore
- 1,400 pounds of coal
- 120 pounds of limestone
By using recycled scrap as our raw material rather than virgin natural resources, we are reducing the need for mining of our natural resources and reducing CO2 emissions by 58%.
Micro Mill Technology
CMC pioneered the latest innovation in micro mill technology. We took the traditional EAF mini mill efficiencies to another level, creating the continuous process micro mill technology that we first implemented with the commissioning of our Mesa, Arizona, facility in August 2009, the first mill using technology of this type to be successfully operated in the United States. We also utilize the micro mill technology in our Durant, Oklahoma facility. Both micro mills produce rebar and T-posts.
The micro mill technology utilizes a continuous casting and rolling process with a single uninterrupted billet strand from melting to finished product. This technology further reduces electricity consumption and improves yield efficiencies. CMC’s dedicated team of professionals, with over a century of steelmaking experience, is committed to industry-leading technology and innovation that helps improve efficiencies and provide you a competitive advantage.
CMC is proud to be associated with many of the steel industry's associations, and our employees give their time and talents to these organizations in an effort to continue to improve our industry.
