A Glimpse At Our History

Our plant became part of the Commercial Metals Company in December 1983 with the purchase of the closed Connors Steel plant in Birmingham. Birmingham was selected as the site for CMC's second steel mill after much study and research and with the cooperation of the Birmingham community through its Industrial Development Board and City Council.

We are a "neighbohood" industry acquiring our manpower, scrap, and other material from the local area. We market our products primarily in the Southeast and increase CMC's scope of services to customers in this region.

Since we began operating our facility, we have made many dramatic changes and upgrades. Included are the new stands in the rolling mill and the new reheat furnace installed in 2008. We've also upgraded our cooling bed and finishing equipment and added warehouse space. Melt shop upgrades included a new DC furnace, a Ladle Metallurgical Station (LMS), and a four strand continuous caster.
