LEED

LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
CMC Joist & Deck is proud to manufacture products that contribute to the green building initiative. Commercial Metals Company, parent company of CMC Joist & Deck, is a leader in the recycling industry and a member of the U.S. Green Building Council. We are typically able to provide LEED Materials and Resources credits in the areas of recycled content and regional materials. Please refer to our Data Sheet: “We Make It Easy to be Green”.

Our joist and deck products are manufactured using partially recycled steel from both pre-consumer and post-consumer scrap. Pre-consumer content, previously referred to as post-industrial content, is scrap that is produced during the manufacturing process that never reaches the consumer as a part of an end user product. Post-consumer content is the scrap produced from households and commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. The recycled content is different for hot rolled shapes and flat rolled sheets and is dependent upon the process used at the mill in producing the steel. Read the article about Recycled Content from the Steel Recycling Institute.

Joists
The steel joists manufactured at our facilities are fabricated using hot rolled steel shapes that are produced using the electric arc furnace (EAF) process and consist of 95 – 100% recycled content. It is difficult to provide an average breakdown for the recycled content because the percentage of recycled content is so high and the steel shapes used in our joist plants are provided by several different mills. The pre-consumer recycled content typically ranges from 17% to 50%, and the post-consumer content is usually between 50% and 83%.

Deck
Our steel deck products are produced from flat rolled sheets in coils that are melted and manufactured using the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) process. On average BOF manufactured steel contains over 32% recycled steel content (6.8% pre-consumer and 25.5% post-consumer content).

We currently operate seven joist plants and three deck plants that are strategically placed to serve all areas of the United States. Our manufacturing facilities are typically located within 500 miles of the project site. In most cases, the steel used in our products comes from mills that are located in close proximity to our manufacturing facilities.

Upon request, we are able to provide project specific letters as submittal documentation for the LEED qualification process. To submit a request please click here.
