The renovation of the Happy Canyon Arena in Pendleton, Oregon, funded by The Happy Canyon Foundation, will include new seating and grandstands complementing the existing historic structures. The first and most important phase has been the roof replacement, which will not only provide cover but add convenience and safety features to the complex as well.

The Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon are held annually in September. The Round-Up began in 1910 and is recognized as one of the oldest and most prestigious rodeos in the world. The Happy Canyon Night Show is a colorful display of Native American pageantry and tradition that takes place nightly during Round-Up. Members of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation - the Umatilla, Cayuse, and Walla Walla Indians host a grand tribal village that annually includes more than 300 teepees. Native Americans from around the Northwest travel to Pendleton to take part in the Happy Canyon Pageant. The Pendleton Round Up and Happy Canyon are iconic events representing Oregon’s history and cultural tourism.

The joists supplied by CMC Joist & Deck for the Happy Canyon Arena roof replacement project were unique in that they were used to replace a roof that had been torn down in 2006. The joists were 142’ long with a 99’ clear span between columns and 40’ tapered cantilever extension on one end. They were spliced at the middle of the clear span and at the beginning of the extension to allow for shipping and jobsite handling. The joists were 72” deep up to the beginning of the cantilevered portion, where they tapered to 36” deep at the end. They were spaced 10’ on center and designed to frame into both the existing columns and beam trusses between the columns via bolted connections at both top and bottom chords. Perimeter angle was shop-welded to the joists being erected at each end of the building to facilitate erection. Our Engineering personnel coordinated with our Sales and Production departments as well as the customer throughout the process and provided technical support from initial request all the way through the completion of the joist erection.
