History
CMC founded its first European office in Amsterdam in the late 1950's and then moved to Switzerland in 1967 where it established both a trading operation for various types of raw materials, such as steel, copper, aluminium, ferroalloys, crude oil, as well as its corporate headquarters for all non US subsidiaries of Commercial Metals Company, Irving, Texas (NYSE: CMC). After successful establishment of subsidiaries, mainly in Asia and Australia, the company added new subsidiaries in the United Kingdom and Germany in the 1990's and decided to strategically concentrate on the marketing of steel products.
Our traditional business - the global sourcing and selling of steel products - was gradually expanded into marketing and distribution in Europe by adding:
- more functions and value to suppliers and customers
- joint ventures in Germany and UK
In 2000, CMC bought a 24% shareholding in Europickling NV, a company created by Van Heyghen Staal (VHS) of Evergem, Belgium. Established in May 1999, Europickling is operating a state of the art push-pull pickling line with a capacity of 500,000 MT/year.

In December 2003, CMC acquired Huta Zawiercie – CMC Zawiercie S.A., the third largest steel producer in Poland with annual capacity in excess of one million metric tons. Facilities include two electric arc furnaces, ladle furnaces and continuous casters. Principal products are rebar and wire rod produced on two separate rolling mills.
With the closing of transaction with the Government of the Republic of Croatia, on September 17, 2007, CMC took over the shares of Valjaonica Cijevi Sisak.
