Scrap Art Gallery

Welcome to CMC's Scrap Art Gallery, a collection of metal sculptures created by high school students. Here you can take a look at the winning entries from our annual Scrap Can Be Beautiful contest.

31st Annual “Scrap Can Be Beautiful Contest”

In conjunction with its annual meeting, Commercial Metals Company held its 31st annual "Scrap Can Be Beautiful" contest for the students in the metal sculpture class of the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. There were 64 metal sculptures on display created by 44 students. Cash prizes were awarded for first, second and third place and honorable mention in two categories, tabletop and floor.

At the beginning of each school year, the students visit the Company's local scrap metal recycling plants to select pieces of metal at no cost. Back at the school, under the guidance of their instructor, each student has free reign to be as creative as they desire with their metal pieces. The pieces of scrap metal are sculpted to form very creative works of art which reflect the artistry and imagination of each student.

Following the annual meeting the winning pieces are on display at the corporate office for one year. Other pieces often go on exhibit at local galleries and museums. Any works of art the students wish to sell are purchased by the Company and then donated to a local charity for their annual auction to benefit the local arts.

Commercial Metals Company is very proud of its affiliation with the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. A significant benefit is the artistic recognition and support the students receive for their work. It also provides an opportunity for the students to attend an annual meeting of a public company.

  • Melbourne’s heritage owes much to a metal CMC does not deal in. It became a prominent city thanks largely to the gold rush of the 1850s.
